X Consultative Congress of the Major Superiors of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, Ireland

The X Consultative Congress of the Major Superiors of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate began today, the 14th October 2012, in the Pallottine College, Thurles, Ireland. The participants include 8 members of the General Administration, 20 Provincial/Regional Rectors, 2 Moderators, 2 Secretaries and 3 Translators. The theme of the Congress is: To revive faith and rekindle charity": Apostles of Jesus in a changing world. "You in your turn must strengthen your brethren" (Lk 22,32). A project of individual and community spiritual renewal.

Today was the day of arrival and welcome. Fr. Jeremiah Murphy, the Provincial Rector of the Mother of Divine Love Province which is hosting this event, welcomed all the participants. Then Fr. Jacob Nampudakam, the Rector General, briefly explained the program of the Congress. This was followed by a Presentation of the History of the Pallottines in Thurles by Fr. Donal McCarthy, a historian belonging to the Mother of Divine Love Province. Fr. McCarthy showed that the history of the Irish Pallottines started with the sending to London of Raphael Melia and Dr. Giuseppe Fa di Bruno by St. Vincent Pallotti in 1844. In fact, it was an old Irish priest, Fr. Thomas Walsh (1823-1889) who joined the Pallottines in Rome in the 1880s, who had first mooted the idea of opening a house in Ireland. In August 1908, Fr. William Whitmee came to Thurles from Rome and secured the permission of the Archbishop of the area, Dr. Thomas Fennelly (1884-1927), to found a House of studies in Thurles. In October 1908 the General Council of the Pallottine Society gave its permission for a Pallottine House to be opened in Thurles and in December of the same year formally approved of a novitiate there. Thus Fr. McCarthy explained the entire history of the Pallottines in Thurles up to the present. It was a very mastery and scientific presentation and the participants were grateful to him.

Tomorrow, 15th October 2012, will be a day of spiritual retreat conducted by Fr. Eamonn Monson.
